A Songwriter’s Chord Chart Tool
Chord charts bridge the gap between the concept of the song and the actual performance. It shows the harmony, structure, pacing, and arrangement without forcing musicians to play everything from memory. When you write out a chord chart, you’re helping communicate the heart of the song to someone else.
The Make More Songs Chord Chart Tool is designed to enhance the collaborative process without overcomplicating it. Our tool has everything you need to create excellent, transposable chord charts for your original songs.
Start with a few lyrics and some chords, and work out advanced and highly detailed charts, all in one place.
Input Stage: Start With The Song
Our tool breaks apart the input stage and the output stage. The input stage is where you form the chart in detail. The output stage lets you see the final result. You can write section titles like Verse, Chorus, Bridge, or Tag, and the chart recognizes them as headers. Your final chart gets that clean polish, while your input stays organized.
Add Chords With A Consistent Bracket Format
Chords are added alongside lyrics inside brackets. Place the bracketed chord directly before the word it should sit above, and the tool will automatically convert it in the output stage.
For example,
[1]Meet me in the [4]morning
turns into
1 4 Meet me in the morning
In standard input mode, you can type every character, chord, and lyric at once with the most detail, but if you want to quickly drop chords in your chart, Bracket Cursor Mode locks the lyrics and lets you click and type chords quickly within the chart. Grab or arrow chords to their exact position and exit Bracket Cursor Mode when you need more detail or lyric changes.
Use Chord Names Or Nashville Numbers
Our Chord Chart tool works with both chord letters and Nashville Numbers. To write with chords, name your root key. Use numbers to leave the transposition to the output stage. In fact, you can choose your key and mix letters and numbers interchangeably if you need to!
Pick Your Output View
Our Chord Chart Tool lets you choose how you want to download and view your chart. Different layouts are ideal for different situations and workflows. The output is generated from the same underlying input data, so you’re never rebuilding the chart, just chosing the best format for the jobe.
- Chords + Lyrics shows the chords over lyrics in the selected key.
- Numbers + Lyrics shows the numbers over lyrics.
- Lyrics shows only the lyrics with no chords (useful for copying to the lyrics module).
- Numbers and Chords show the chart in brackets to import into other chord chart tools.
Transpose And Listen Before Rehearsal
In output, you can select listen mode to quickly audition the sound of the chord, ideal for finding the right key or checking that the chord choice was right. The tool automatically adjusts to your selected output key so you can edit and check seamlessly.
Practical Details and Information
All chart information, like BPM, meter, and songwriters, gets collected in the information tab. They automatically show up on the chord chart. The editor also has standard undo and redo for quick editing, clear and reset controls, and export features.
When you’re ready to share, export the chart and share across your devices with your team, or keep using the chart in output mode in your songwriting workspace.
Input, Output, And Split Views
The Chord Chart builder intelligently adapts to your screen size and workflow. You can focus on input, read the output, or use split mode to see your work side-by-side. Each workflow serves a different purpose in the songwriting process.
One Editor, Wherever You Work
You can use the Chord Chart Builder independently on our website, or access the same tool in a songwriting workspace. You get the benefits of both: a library of charts you can open, edit, and download, and a powerful chord chart tool alongside other central songwriting tools in the song workspace. You can always start the chart as a standalone tool and import it into a new song.
